Harris-Trump Debate Draws 67.1 Million Viewers

An estimated 67.1 million people watched the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. That was a 31% gain compared to the debate last June between Trump and President Joe Biden, a contest that ultimately led Biden to exit the 2024 race.

According to Nielsen, it was hosted by ABC News and simulcast on 17 different networks. The June Trump vs. Biden debate reached 51.3 million.

Viewership this Tuesday reached 67.1 million, failing to reach the record of 84 million set by the debate of Trump against Hillary Clinton in 2016. It even trailed behind the 73.1 million who had watched the first presidential debate between Biden and Trump in 2020.

Nielsen data shows a notable increase in younger and middle-aged viewers for the Harris-Trump debate, with 53% more adults aged 18-49 tuning in compared to those who watched Biden in the same context. Among cable networks, Fox News led with 9.1 million viewers for the debate. The channel is known for its favorable coverage of Trump.

Harris was widely perceived as the winner of the debate. The same CNN flash poll revealed 63% of those viewers surveyed believed Harris did a better job during the debate, while 37% gave that nod to Trump. Going into the debate, viewers polled were evenly split: 50-50 on who would win. Ninety-six percent of those supporting Harris said she did the better job. Meanwhile, 69% of Trump supporters agreed.

Trump’s campaign publicly claimed victory after the debate, but some aides privately told the Guardian that it was doubtful he swayed any undecided voters to his side.

The debate’s viewership of 67.1 million falls between the series finales of Seinfeld (76.3 million) and Friends (52.5 million).

 After Debate.

Shortly after the debate ended, Taylor Swift endorsed the Harris-Walz ticket to her 283 million Instagram followers and included a link to Vote.gov. Following her post, the site saw nearly 338,000 new visitors in the hours that followed, according to a General Services Administration spokesperson who spoke to MSNBC.

Swift’s endorsement is anticipated to have a significant impact on Americans under 35, with about 30% of this group more likely to vote for a candidate she supports, according to Newsweek polling. The poll also found that 18% of voters are “more likely” or “significantly more likely” to support a Swift-backed candidate, while 17% are less likely.

  • No additional debates are currently scheduled between the presidential candidates. However, the Harris campaign has requested another debate, and Fox News Channel has publicly offered alternatives. CBS will host a debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance on October 1st.
  • Tuesday’s debate was important not only because of this year’s coming election, but also in terms of the recent impact that took place with the last presidential debate where Biden had to withdraw.
  • While CNN didn’t challenge any misstatements during Trump’s June debate with Biden, ABC took a different tack, challenging Trump on abortion, immigration, the 2020 election, and violent crime.
